As we were completing 700th robotic radical hysterectomy case today with the latest X DaVinci robot at American Oncology Institute, I am reminded of the trial we did in 2013 much before anyone else did in Telugu states. It was a tough journey those days and I remember a patients daughter who is a gynaecologist refused robotic surgery as she thought a robot operates and not me and didn’t want it so. I asked her to come into operation theatre and watch the surgery. then she realised the robot is a type of artificial intelligence and augmented reality enhancing the skills of a surgeon and its Surgeon who operates and not the robot. Robot is just an instrument like a scalpel or scissors in open surgery. The robot is an active tool with 3 D vision, it cancels the tremors of the operating surgeon making instrument steady, magnifies vision by 5 times so that we can see better and remove tumor easily, see vessels and nerves better thereby decreasing the damage to them . That’s the reason the patient goes home faster and goes back to work faster after robotic hysterectomy. And X DaVinci is the latest 4th generation robot which we started 2 years ago and now many centres are procuring these 4th generation now. Technology has always guided our journey and will do so in the future.
We started these robotic procedures in 2010 , decade ago and feel glad we crossed 3,550 overall and 100 cases of hysterectomies. And we are helping our gynaecologists and our fellows to continue the process because we strongly believe we should create more robotic surgeons and let them choose the best way to heal patients better. I thank Dr.Kiranmai and Dr. Kaveri for helping us in the publication and Dr. Vikas for coordinating.
Excellent surgery and very lucid explanation of critical steps like avoiding usage of manipulator and care to be take at UV junction.
Hearty congratulations …..
